A – Z Challenge – Feminism

With thanks to Merriam- Webster:

1: the theory of the political, economic, and social equality of the sexes

2: organized activity on behalf of women’s rights and interests

I did not know, the shit storms that would blow into my life when I became honest with myself and all others in regards to feminism.

I did not know the people I would lose respect for and the relationships I would end.

I did not know the fights I would have. The sadness and hopelessness I would feel. The tears I would cry. The rage I would expel. The fear I would feel.

I did not know the lessons I would learn. The wisdom I would gain through the people who would teach me. The biases I would confront- internal and externally.

I did not know the assholes I would face, the strength I would develop. The clarity I would feel.

I did not know and I still don’t know, the lot of it.

This is an ever evolving journey.

  1. Not sure if this is how you feel but I feel this way about unions. I am in support of unions but not militant unionists. Some people who are unionists want to force it on businesses but many businesses treat their employees well, and pay them fairly, even generously without the interference of a union. They are many laws already in place to support non-union people. This may not relate to you and feminism. Keep those letters coming !!

  2. I am a fan of strongly worded letters, ha ha.

I have said some pretty strong words about unions in my time but the older I get the more I realize that great change doesn’t come without ruffling some feathers. I think it all depends on the situation. There is no one size fits all solution. My dad was in lumber unions…oy vey. Those were the days. Some sketchy shit went down and they did some good too.

I support people who stand up and fight for what is right. I cannot abide injustice. The same holds true for feminist issues. So if all is good…great! If its not…stand up and make it so.

  3. Yes, all of the things you mention make me clearly understand why so many women preface a statement with, “I am not a feminist, but…” I refuse to do that, no matter what. I am a feminist, let anyone presume anything they want about me based on that knowledge!
